If you're on the hunt for a culinary adventure that beautifully fuses Malaysian, Singaporean, and Thai flavors, Laut is a must-visit gem right in the heart of New York City. Tucked away on East 17th Street, this vibrant restaurant offers an authentic experience that beckons food lovers from all over.

As you step inside Laut, you’re transported to a bustling Asian street market, thanks to the restaurant’s lively decor and warm ambiance. The atmosphere is cozy yet vibrant, perfect for a casual dining experience or a gathering with friends. Their attentive staff, including friendly waiters like Steven, are committed to making your visit enjoyable, ensuring that service is swift even during peak hours.

The star of the show, of course, is the food. Laut’s menu features a variety of mouthwatering dishes, with their signature offering, Nasi Lemak, being a popular choice among patrons. This dish is a harmonious blend of rich coconut rice, spicy rendang curry chicken, and shrimp in sambal sauce, accompanied by tasty sides such as achar (pickled veggies), peanuts, and anchovies. Each bite is a delightful exploration of textures and flavors that encapsulates the essence of Malaysian cuisine.

For those venturing beyond the Nasi Lemak, Laut also serves delectable options like the Shrimp Laksa, a creamy coconut soup with noodles filled with bold spices that tickle the senses. Many customers have raved about the Night Market Noodles, a dish that promises layers of flavor with its unique spice profile, keeping diners coming back for more.

Vegetarians will not be left out either; dishes like Roti Canai and the rich Curry Laksa Noodle Soup are also crowd favorites, with the latter offering a decadent experience that many diners have described as unforgettable. Shruti Potdar particularly highlighted Laut’s Roti Canai for its flakiness and flavor, while Maria O’Leary loved the enticing Curry Puffs that pack a delicious punch as starters.

If you’re a fan of pairing your meals with drinks, Laut offers a well-curated selection of wines, including a $5 happy hour for wine and beer from 5 PM to 6 PM—making it an excellent opportunity to unwind after a long day. The menu also features unique sake options to enhance your dining experience further.

While most reviews shine favorably upon Laut's offerings, there have been a few mixed experiences, with some guests commenting on specific dishes falling short of expectations. However, the general consensus is that the vibrant flavors, cozy atmosphere, and exceptional service create a kitchen of joy that resonates well with its visitors.

For a dive into the rich, cultural tastes of Southeast Asia right in the heart of Manhattan, Laut invites both food enthusiasts and newcomers to discover the delightful world of Malaysian cuisine. This is more than just a meal; it’s an experience that will tantalize your taste buds and leave you with a hunger for round two!

Finally got a chance to go to this place. The food was amazing, the service was quick. I ordered Roto Canai for appetizers and it was so flaky and flavorful. For mains. I ordered Shrimp Laksa and Night market noodles. Both the dishes were outstanding. I would come here again and again just for the Night market noodles.

Laut is located by Union square. Once you walk in, the decoration gives you a sense of busy street like Asia. Really cool. Our waiter Steven was very nice. We had a big group with multiple orders. Everything came out without any issue. Food was amazing. I liked all the dishes that we ordered. Flavorful and good portion. The hainan chicken was fried which was a little odd to me. Usually it’s steamed over rice. Nevertheless it’s good. I recommend Roti Canai and soft she chili crabs and crispy wontons. But again, all of them are good.

The atmosphere is cozy. This was my first time trying Malaysian food and I was not disappointed. The apps were all delicious (fries, wontons). The rotis were hot, soft, and tasty. Wonderful spice (heat) on all dishes. Definitely recommend the pulled tea!

I was so excited about visiting Laut but was sadly underwhelmed by the food. I had the sampler and a lackluster cocktail. My buddy had a chicken dish and left 1/2 of it on his plate. I did enjoy the coconut rice, and the service was great. Most of the reviews were so favorable that I think I'll go back one more time. I'll update this post once I do.

Our waitress was super friendly and helpful (it says, Sajana, on the check). Food was delicious! We had Curry Puffs, Vegetable dumplings as starters. We enjoyed a lot, especially, Curry Puffs were the best! As an entree, we had Curry Laksa Noodle Soup and Pineapple Rice. I enjoyed the Curry Noodles the best!

Made a reservation to ensure our spot, and good thing we did, cause it got packed within 20 minutes of opening during lunch hours on a Sunday. Upon entering, I was so impressed with the interior, gorgeous wall art, beautiful ceiling, and a small bar in the back corner. The menu had so many exciting dishes. They were pricey but that’s expected in the city. We picked a bunch to have a full on family style meal. We ordered the roti canai, roti telur, ilat bakar (fish), duck curry, Singapore crispy soft shell chili crab, baby bok choi, Hainanese roast chicken with rice, Malaysian curry with shrimp and side of bao buns. The dishes started coming out one after another within short intervals. All the dishes were so amazing, huge portions, full of flavors. My favorite were the chili crab, duck, roti canai and the Thai iced tea. All of us were belly full as we throughly enjoyed all the dishes. We even had some leftovers to take home. The service was good. Our server was so friendly. Empty dishes and plates were taken out quickly. We were able to take our sweet time dining in. Overall we had a delightful lunch experience here with our friends and kids.

An intimate romantic place. A bit on the louder side, but you can carry on a conversation without too much trouble. Great service and very tasty food. Price is reasonable for what they offer.
